Building a dog house is a project that most people will be able to accomplish, as long as they have fairly basic DIY skills. These free dog house plans allow you to build quite a professional looking dog house that you can be proud of.

There are lots of different plans on the Internet which can be used to make dog houses. This guide will look at the simple dog house because it’s a good beginners house anyone should be able to build. The simple dog house is the easiest home for your dog that you can make. While looking simple it still looks beautiful and is a practical place for your dog to take shelter from the elements. It’s also possible to make changes to the design and paint different colors to create a unique dog house.

You will need:

– Engineers Square
– Tape measure
– Dust Mask
– Hammer
– Nails
– Circular Saw
– Table Saw
– Goggles
– Paintbrush
– Ear protection
– Shingles
– Paint or wood stain
– 8 foot length of 2×4 timber
– 10 foot length of 2×4 timber
– 4″ by 8″ Sheet of exterior siding

Step 1 – Marking

This dog house is designed to fit perfectly out of a 4″ by 8″ sheet of siding with only very minimal wastage. Two floor panels are cut for extra strength and durability.

Mark out the panels onto the siding carefully using a pencil and making lots of measurement’s. Then cut along the lines to create the individual panels. When cutting the opening make sure it’s only just large enough for your dog to fit inside.

Step 2 – More Cutting

The 10 foot length of 2×4 needs to be cut into 4 pieces of 6″ long, 2 pieces of 20 3.4″ long and 2 more pieces 22 7/8″ long. These will form the legs, platform and sides of the dog house.

Step 3 – Assembling the platform

Round the edges of the four 6″ pieces of timber you cut before, these are the legs of the dog house. Nail these to the long lengths you cut before making sure they are lined up with the corner. Position the smaller lengths to form a box and attach to the 6″ legs with nails.

Then put the first piece of flooring down, hopefully there won’t be an overhang, but if there is this can be corrected by using a circular saw to trim off any extra wood.

Step 4 – Building the Frame

Now it’s time to build the frame of the dog house. Attach the side, front and back panels to the frame timber. Then start to attach everything together.

Step 5 – Checking for Nails

Before you put the roof on the dog house, it’s a good idea to check you haven’t got any sharp nail points inside. If there are any sharp nails then take the time now to cut them off and file flat. You don’t want to cause any injury to your dog.

Step 6 – Attaching the Roof

Then all that’s left to do is attach the roof to the dog house. This can be done with the lengths of timber and nails.

Step 7 – Finishing Touches

Apply shingles to the roof to weatherproof and finish the roof. Then the wooden dog house can either be painted or stained to weatherproof it and make sure it lasts for as long as possible.
